While I wanted to save my reviews of Toad Hollow’s wines for a featured winery piece to come soon, I have to take advantage of a recent picture I took of the Raven Theater Marquee in Healdsburg, CA.
I opened up the 2005 Merlot Reserve, Richard McDowell Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 14.5% alc, last week to pair with a hearty beef stroganoff. It was a beautiful rich purpley burgundy color. I used a cup of the Merlot in the recipe in place of water, and I served the stroganoff with the wine.
My first thought, putting nose to glass was “f***, that’s a nose!” I’m not great at self editing my interior monologue, and clearly I am prone to the occasional curse in my private thoughts.
The nose is just full of big, bold, juicy, ripe fruit. Deeply floral, plum, rose, dark stone fruit, black cherry, black berry and cassis.
The mouth is incredible smooth and drinkable, open, and ready (I forgot it was a 2005) to drink. Black cherry and black berry, anise. Nice balance of acid and tannin.
A really soft wine with a nice lingering tapering finish.
The wine is gorgeously elegant, loaded with lush fruit through and through.
Thoroughly delicious and a QPR (quality to price ratioo) steal at $16, the 2005 Toad Hollow Merlot reserve is made from 100% Merlot grapes grown on a sandy bench three miles south of Healdsburg and Toad Hollow proudly claims a wine that demonstrates a sense of place, or terroir.
I poured myself a second glass about an hour after dinner, for dessert, and as I put my nose to the glass, again my first thought was “f***!” Translated, that means I loved this wine and was just completely impressed and delighted with it.
Disclosure: I received the 2005 Toad Hollow Merlot Reserve reviewed as a sample.

I didn’t see the movie Merlove, but on the way back from ZAP Zindandel tastings, when I drove into Healdsburg to visit Toad Hollow’s newly reopened tasting room for an upcoming feature I plan on doing on the winery and their wines, I saw the marquee and I ran back on foot to take the picture. I wanted to save the Merlot review for the winery feature coming but the Merlot was delicious, I had the picture…well, you know how it is; sometimes events outside and around us make our choices for us. Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy Toad Hollow’s Merlot Reserve as much as I did. Cheers back at you.

John, we’ll take your curses and thank you for them. The stroganoff sounds great too!

Kathleen, if you are anything like me, you cook with wine as often as you can; and the better the wine, the better the food. The stroganoff is a much better color for having your Merlot replacing water for moisture when cooking – to offset the extra heaviness, add 1/8 cup of 7 up, that’s a trick I learned from my dear departed mom. I can send you the recipe for your wine club members down the road if you would like.
Sorry to include a masked curse in my review of your 2005 Merlot, but I was truly shocked at how big and lush it was for a 100% Merlot. In the past, I have found other 100% Merlot to be boring, flabby, weak and insipid. Joe Nagan, your Sales & Mktg VP, told me that the sandy soil bench you grow your Merlot makes this wine unique, I am thrilled to confirm the wine’s uniqueness. I would say that you managed to get about a liter worth of Merlot character into a 750 ml bottle; the wine was about 1 1/3 of what I was expecting.

Yes, please e-mail the recipe when you can. 7 up? well they use Coke in BBQ sauce and baked hams in the south so why not. And yes, I do cook with wine. A little in the food, a little in me – repeat steps 1 & 2…. everybody gets a little marinaded that way!
